Batman in Order #25: Detective Comics Issue 47 (1941)

By: Karl Stern (Patreon / Facebook / Email)

The 25th appearance of The Batman took place in the January 1941 issue of Detective Comics issue 47.

Detective Comics issue 47 continues the move of Batman from more gritty stories to less violent stories. Periodically, Batman is still drawn in dynamic ways such as his pro wrestling style press slam on a bad guy on the opening page of the stories.

issue 47 of Detective Comics is one of the more boring Batman stories out of the first 25 appearances of Batman. Bruce Wayne spends most of the story looking like a dime store Dick Tracy.

For reasons unknown, Bruce Wayne decides to meddle in the personal lives of a family of rich socialites.

The story takes many pages to finally get some action in it as a newsboy is hit by a speeding car, forcing Batman to take action.

Batman’s action scenes have a very silver age feel to them in this solidly golden age book. This particular story is disconnected and not particularly interesting, but the art is becoming more and more dynamic.

One of the more interesting notes in this otherwise uninteresting story is, for the first time, Batman reveals that he dislikes guns. In earlier issues Batman had periodically held and even used guns and had killed multiple people in his earliest issues.

Ultimately, Bruce Wayne’s meddling in the socialite family’s business draws the family closer together but again, Bruce Wayne looks as though he belongs in a Dick Tracy comic book instead.
