Comic Book Movies, Classic Monsters, Serials and more Review Podcasts ($1 level on Patreon)

These podcasts review vintage superhero or action-adventure made for TV movies, movies, or serialized films. You get all of them by supporting us on Patreon at the $1 level or higher or you can buy the shows individually through PayPal.

The Green Hornet (1940)

The Green Hornet is an interesting hero character from the early days of radio. In continuity he is the great-nephew of the Lone Ranger, though this is seldom brought up. He is a newspaper owner by day and a mob buster by night. Accompanied by his trusty sidekick Kato, the duo fight crime and on this Patreon podcast special we discuss the 1940 movie serial. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Adventures of Captain Marvel (1941)

The earliest true “superhero” movie-serial. Captain Marvel (known now-days as Shazam) is presented in a slightly different version in this serial adventure. While some of the specifics might be a little different than the comics, the costume is fantastic and this is generally considered one of the best adventures of the serialized era. Free!

The Wolf Man (1941)

I’ve grouped our podcast reviews of the old Universal Monster movies under this heading too because- why not! The Universal Monsters were amazing. Much of the werewolf lore you’re familiar with actually comes from The Wolf Man and it’s sequels and was the first Universal Monsters movie not based on an existing novel. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

The Batman (1943)

Oh boy... you win some and you lose some. While Adventures of Captain Marvel from Republic Films was a real winner the same can not be said for the racist and silly 1943 Columbia Film The Batman. The casting was beyond terrible and there were few good qualities about this 15 part serial. The costuming was fine but today we meet a Batman who never wins a fight, a Robin that was at least twice too old, and dialog meant to offend probably everyone. This film did introduce The Bat's Cave to Batman lore and just wait until you hear about the amazing special effect that accompanied the Batmobile! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Son of Dracula (1943)

There's a new Dracula in town kids. Following the classic Bela Lugosi led classic, Universal Pictures came back with two (sort of) sequels- Daughter of Dracula and Son of Dracula. We take a look at Son of Dracula that apparently doesn't feature the son of Dracula at all. Nope, it's the count himself and he is played by Lon Chaney, Jr. this time with Bela Lugosi nowhere to be found. This time Dracula comes to the U.S. looking for fresh blood but he's not looking for a bride... a bride is looking for him! Listen in as Karl from When It Was Cool reviews Son of Dracula! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

House of Frankenstein (1944)

It's monster mash time! Yes, it's a big Universal monster team up on this week's retro movie review featuring Frankenstein's Monster, the Wolf Man, Dracula, plus a hunchback and a mad doctor too! Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney, Jr. join a new Count Dracula (John Carradine) in an adventure that answers whatever happened to these monsters following their solo movies? It's a wacky mess of a movie with more in common with a modern superhero group film than a horror movie. Note: There are some brief audio distortions that last a few seconds a couple times in this show. Please note they are short in duration. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Captain America (1944)

Today Karl from When It Was Cool reviews the 1944 Captain America movie serial. This is an interesting one, it's actually a pretty good movie serial just not a good Captain America serial. Give it a listen and you will understand. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman (1948)

There were two Superman movie serials produced, one in 1948 and another in 1950. This week we look at the first where Superman faces an original masked crime lord called The Spider Lady. The serial is actually pretty decent aside from the low budget and animated flight sequences. Most of the actors are fine and while Superman might be a little too much on the silly side he was still considerably better than the much maligned Batman actors from the same era. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Batman & Robin (1949)

The 1949 follow up to the previously reviewed 1943 The Batman. This serial was titled simply "Batman and Robin" and was a much better story with significantly worse costuming. There were some hilarious blunders along the way and once again Robin is old enough to be your dad but let's take a look at this much less racist Batman as he takes on the masked Wizard! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Atom Man vs. Superman (1950)

Atom Man vs. Superman (1950) was the sequel to the 1948 Superman serial and used the original actors in their roles again. This time, however, the villain is a good one- Lex Luthor! We take a look at Lex Luthor's first time appearing in a live action series and, in my opinion, this is the best Luthor to-date! Atom Man... not so much. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman and the Mole Men (1951)

This is my first time seeing George Reeves as Superman. Reeves was the iconic Superman of the 1950s and this movie length feature launched that beloved series. I didn't think this was very good and compared to the Superman movie serials a few years before fell short. But apparently it struck a chord in children of the era because it launched one of the most beloved TV series in American history. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Dark Shadows (1966)

This is a review of the run of Dark Shadows television shows which featured the character Barnabas Collins who maybe, possibly, perhaps was a vampire. This is a really unique TV show/soap opera unlike anything else I've ever seen on television. With all the melodrama of a soap opera but with vampires, ghosts, and a mystery! Join host Karl Stern as he discusses Dark Shadows. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Star Trek (1966)

It's one of the biggest television shows in history! Today at When It Was Cool, Karl reviews Episode 1 Season 1 of Star Trek from 1966. Now Karl is admittedly a bigger Star Wars fan than Star Trek fan but he tells us that he really enjoyed episode 1 of Star Trek. This episode in interesting, in that, it is actually closer to a horror or Twilight Zone episode than a sci-fi movie. We meet Captain Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Sulu, and others for the first time and learn a little bit about them. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Batman (1966)

One of the most iconic classic era tv shows of all time - Batman! We review season 1 episode 1 where we meet Batman and Robin for the first time but this is no origin story! Thankfully, we are dropped straight into a caper involving The Riddler and Batman fights crime with the famous Bat Dance! It's everything you love about the 1966 Batman series right out of the gate! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Kung Fu TV Pilot (1972)

This is my favorite TV series of all time. If you think the show is just the butt of the joke "Snatch the pebble from my hand, grasshopper" then you need some schoolin'! And I'm going to give it to you because you are missing out on one of the greatest television shows and characters ever. On this When It Was Cool audio review special host Karl Stern takes a look at the television pilot movie which sets the mythos for the show which ran three seasons. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Six Million Dollar Man (1973)

In 1973 the Six Million Dollar Man debuted and, like many of the TV shows from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s you know most of what you need to know from the show intro- Steve Austin, a man barely alive. We can rebuild him. Better than before. Better, faster, stronger. Based on the Cyborg novels, astronaut Steve Austin becomes a super powered government agent who ends up fighting space probes, androids, and Bigfoot. Enjoy! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Shazam! (1974)

In 1974 one of the most popular superheroes of the golden age made his long awaited return to pop culture. DC Comics had already started publishing the adventures of Captain Marvel in the pages of the Shazam! comic book. Now that hero, in a slightly altered form, took to the TV screens on Saturday mornings in 1974. Billy Batson, a socially conscious teenager in this version, travels the country with a totally not creepy old duded called "Mentor" in a camper van... I swear this is actually going somewhere wholesome... helping other youngsters in need. Jackson Bostwick stars (originally) as Captain Marvel. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Spider-Man (1977)

In 1977 Marvel Comics brought Spider-Man to live action for the first time. Well... not the first time if you count the Electric Company on PBS but you get the picture. I had no idea that this ended up being a TV series that ran TWO seasons! My childhood memory wanted this to be a couple TV specials and I remember them not being very good. Well, the TV pilot wasn't as bad as I remembered. It wasn't good but it wasn't horrible. More like just boring while soaked in 1970s. Anyway, here's the audio review. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Bigfoot and Wildboy (1977)

From the 1977 Saturday morning TV line-up I bring you, out of the Pacific Northwest, the tale of Bigfoot and Wildboy. Bigfoot finds a lost boy and raises him and they solve mysteries along with a Forest Ranger and his daughter. In this episode they take on evil space aliens who have landed a UFO in order to steal minerals from a lake. I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman (1978)

OK, it's time for the one that's going to get me in trouble. This movie is beloved. I have friends who claim this is their favorite movie. Recently, Margot Kidder who played Lois Lane passed away and social media was filled with tributes to her portrayal of Lois Lane... I hated it. I hated it when I was seven years old. I hated it as a kid when it replayed on television. Here in 2018 when it has been years since I saw it I resolved to watch it with a fresh set of eyes and... I hated it. I did think Christopher Reeve was the best Superman to date and I don't see how anyone will ever beat him as Superman but I hate everything else about this movie. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Incredible Hulk (1978)

The original 1978 TV series by way of the NBC streaming app to see episode 1 season 1 where we get the origin and first transformation of the TV Incredible Hulk. This was a really good, high quality, television show and still stands out from most of the TV superhero offerings of the era. Starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Battlestar Galactica (1978)

This is a great series that holds up really well. Don't judge Battlestar Galactica by it's 1980 spin-off because the original is so much better. In the first episode we find out about the tribes of man, the deception of the Cylons, and why the survivors pointed their way toward Earth. Is it a Star Wars rip off? Yeah, in a lot of ways it is, especially in design, but there is actually more to it than that and the story itself is very different. Let's talk Battlestar Galactica! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Legends of the Superheroes: The Challenge (1979)

There's no good way of saying this. As bad as I wanted this to be good, or at least entertaining, Legends of the Superheroes was just terrible. Two Legends of the Superheroes specials aired in 1979 just a few days apart. This review looks at the first one "The Challenge". It reunited three members of the 1960s Batman cast- Adam West (Batman), Burt Ward (Robin), and Frank Gorshin (Riddler), along with several new heroes and villains- Hawkman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Captain Marvel, Huntress, Black Canary, Dr. Sivana, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, the Weather Wizard, and others. As awesome as that may sound... it wasn't. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Legends of the Superheroes: The Roast (1979)

The second 1979 special from the Legends of the Superheroes set of shows - The Roast. In concept this sounds even worst than the abomination that aired last week. In reality, it was no better nor any worse. Again, instead of a live action Super Friends special what we got was a terrible Saturday Night Live meets Hee Haw special. We do get the brief appearance of a new DC Comics hero that wasn't on the previous special- The Atom. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Captain America (1979)

The 1970s gave us a Marvel television series that had great success- The Incredible Hulk. But we also go a few misfires along the way. One of those was Captain America. Captain America got two TV specials in 1979 and we will cover the second one next week. Honestly, aside from the questionable costuming, the Captain America special isn't that bad. Captain America is a government agent, Steve Rogers, who gets powers from an experimental formula created by his father. He uses these new abilities for select government missions, equipped a bullet proof shield, an advanced motorcycle, and a sweet van. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979)

This special edition When It Was Cool Patreon only podcast takes a look at the second (and last) Captain America TV special from 1979 titled Death Too Soon. It actually wasn't a bad show for 1970s standards. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Galactica 1980 (1980)

Battlestar Galactica was a great television show which ran in 1978-79 for one season. The show got compared a lot, and rightfully so, to Star Wars. But it was plagued behind the scenes with all sorts of production, budget, and other difficulties. A variety of outside forces caused Battlestar Galactica's ratings to be less than expected. A second season came out in 1980 revamped as Galactica 1980 with a time jump forward and largely new cast. The show had lots of good... and bad about it. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman II (1980)

This is the When It Was Cool review of the 1980 movie Superman II which was recut in 2006 to reflect the vision of the original director Richard Donner. It includes numerous added scenes and a different overall story than the original version. It stars Christopher Reeve again in the lead role of Superman as he takes on the trio of villains we saw banished to the Phantom Zone in the first movie. Kneel before Zod. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Shazam (Animated) (1981)

Here is a review of the 1981 Saturday morning cartoon series Shazam! I take a look at the episode featuring Shazam's most well known (at least in the mainstream) villain Black Adam. Shazam is a super hero who derives his powers from Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman III (1983)

So... you're probably expecting me to hate this movie worse than Superman I and II right? In many ways I did except for the fact that this movie actually knows what it is it just has the wrong name. This is actually an early 1980s Richard Pryor movie guest starring Superman. Looking at it from that angle it's not horrible. But as a Superman movie... it's pretty abhorrent. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman IV - The Quest for Peace (1987)

The final Christopher Reeve Superman movie - Superman 4 - The Quest for Peace or as I like to call it Screw It 4 - Let's Just Do A Super Friends Episode. This time Superman gets an honest to goodness super powered foe. Someone who can meet him punch for punch. Forget the fact that his creation is utterly ridiculous and just enjoy the fact that they totally gave up on this movie and just threw some stuff on screen. The special effects somehow got worse too... oh, and world peace and all that. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Incredible Hulk Returns (1988)

The 1988 The Incredible Hulk returns which features the return of the Lou Ferrigno Hulk after several years off of TV and teams him up with the first ever live action Thor! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989)

This is a Patreon only audio review of the 1989 made for TV special The Trial of the Incredible Hulk starring Daredevil. This was the first ever live action appearance of Daredevil and the next to last live action appearance for the Lou Ferrigno Hulk. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Swamp Thing TV Show (1990)

I'm not sure how I missed Swamp Thing in 1990. I was just out of high school so I probably was busy with real life but I have gone back now and watched the debut episode. I now realize I didn't miss much. The show seems largely pretty terrible but the Swamp Thing costume looked pretty cool. I haven't seen either of the Swamp Thing movies either and apparently there is a new Swamp Thing series in the works so it's time to do some catching up! Here is the When It Was Cool look back at the 1990 TV series Swamp Thing. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Superman Returns (2006)

This one is short and sweet. The final chapter (sort of) of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies except it doesn't star Christopher Reeve and they ignore everything after Superman II. Believe it or not, this movie isn't bad. It certainly isn't great. It's just very... well... listen and I'll tell you about it. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Ghost Rider (2007)

Ghost Rider is a Marvel Comics character who got his first movie in 2007 and a sequel a few years later. Though these movies are not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe there isn't any real reason they couldn't be. The Ghost Rider movie stars Nicholas Cage in the lead role and is largely faithful to the 1970s comic version of Ghost Rider. Sam Elliott also stars as the circa 1800s era Ghost Rider which is a very different take on the comic book version. How did the movie hold up? Join Karl as he looks back at Ghost Rider (2007). $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Watchmen (2009)

The 2009 adaptation of the largest selling graphic novel in comics history - Watchmen. The movie takes a dystopian look at the 1980s in an alternate timeline of history where Nixon is still President, nuclear war is imminent, and superheroes have been outlawed. There is a big mystery villain and a larger than life super powered hero forced to make some history altering choices. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

The first chronological installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain America: The First Avenger from 2011 which takes place during World War II and follows a young weakling with a big heart- Steve Rogers who ends up getting an experimental super soldier serum which turns him into Captain America. Then we follow his heroic exploits through the war, meet Bucky Barnes and the Howling Commandos, and much more! A great, fun, super hero movie! $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Man of Steel (2013)

The movie that launched the cinematic universe I utterly hate the most. In 2013 the Warner Brothers DC Comics movie universe launched with Superman and his first movie Man of Steel. This movie isn't bad. It just doesn't know what it is. It's several movies in one. Some are good movies and some aren't. But one thing this movie did was set the tone for the following DC movies and that is where it fails the most. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

The Flash WB TV series (2014)

Karl from When It Was Cool reviews his first WB TV series based on the DC Comics character The Flash. The Flash has had a live action TV series before and there is a different Flash in the WB movie universe. The Flash on WB is actually a really good show and Karl tells you all about it in this Patreon exclusive podcast. $1 Patreon level.

If you don’t want to become a Patreon you can still get this show for $0.99.

Penny Dreadful TV series (2014)

Penny Dreadful originally aired for three seasons on Showtime and has recently been available on Netflix. The series takes multiple horror genre archetypes from Victorian era England and places them together in an adventure. Dr. Frankenstein and his monster(s), the Wolfman, multiple members of the Dracula mythos, witches, Dr. Jeykle, and a few original characters all cross paths, do battle, and seek out their destinies in this series. Karl and Tonya discuss how good the series was, who was in it, and how it all worked. $1 Patreon level.

Justice League (2017)

Yes... we finally got around to reviewing the latest (awful) offering from the (horrendous) WB DC movie universe. We finally get all of our (least) favorite movie universe heroes together to be sad in unison and fight an outrageously forgettable villain. DC's movie universe needs razed to the ground, buried, and forgotten. $1 Patreon level.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Halloween (2018)

Karl and Tonya from When It Was Cool review the latest movie in the Halloween franchise. Forget everything except Halloween I from 1978 as this is a direct sequel to that movie and in the latest Halloween time-line Halloween 1978 and Halloween 2018 are the only two movies that count. It's been 40 years since the Halloween murders and Michael Meyers has been locked away and hasn't spoken a word. But guess who breaks out? And guess who he is after? Aquaman (2018)

We finally watched Aquaman. The popular opinion among fans of the DC movies is that there have been three good ones - Wonder Woman (meh), Shazam (Yeah!), and Aquaman. Tonya and Karl have now watched Aquaman and while they were mild on it the movie did have some great moments and some interesting characters.
