07-17-1988: Bruiser Brody (Frank Goodish) is killed by Invader 1 (Jose Gonzalez) in a locker room in Bayamon, Puerto Rico at Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium. Bruiser Brody was in the locker room before his scheduled match with Dan Spivey when José Huertas González allegedly asked him to step into the shower area to discuss business. There was an argument between the two wrestlers and a scuffle ensued. Due to the design of the dressing room, there were no witnesses to the altercation. However, two screams were heard, loud enough for the entire locker room to hear. Tony Atlas ran to the shower and saw Brody bent over and holding his stomach. Atlas then looked up at González and saw him holding a knife. Brody later died from his stab wounds. González claimed self-defense and testified in his own defense. He was acquitted of murder in 1989. The prosecution witnesses living outside of Puerto Rico did not show up, claiming they had not received their summons until after the trial had ended.

10-03-1988: Eddie Gilbert is fired as booker for Continental Wrestling Federation (CWF) by owner David Woods.

The lead story of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Saga of the Road to Birmingham: Eddie Gilbert has a bitter fallout and quits / fired from Continental as booker. Eddie Gilbert and Paul Heyman wanted to build the promotion into a competitor to the national TV players, which is why the TV show had become so angle-heavy and serialized, whereas the people who owned the promotion just kind of wanted to be a minor indy. For example, the cost of sending the weekly tapes to stations across the country went from about $2.50 per tape (for regular postage) to $7 per tape (for overnight service) and it wasn’t a cost that ownership wanted to incur. Although then it led to tapes getting mixed up or not arriving on time. Plus, crowds were down (not unusual at this time of year, notes Dave Meltzer) and the other wrestlers were getting annoyed that the shows were so heavily focused on Eddie Gilbert and Paul E. Dangerously. The tournament to crown the first CWF champion is up in the air.
